District 9 review

Multinational United (MNU) is tasked to relocate the aliens from District 9 to District 10. Wikus van de Merwe (Sharlto Copley) is assigned the relocation of aliens by serving illegal eviction notices. He then gets infected while growing an alien arm so MNU conducts several tests such as using his hand to fire the alien weapons. Wikus makes a deal with an alien (Christopher) to have his hand fixed and the aliens go home. He was able to steal weapons to look for the canister of Chris and flies a space ship. Nigerian arms-dealer Obesandjo orders the capture of Wikus after being detained shortly by a cruel MNU soldier Koobus Venter (David James). Wikus saves his alien friend by using one of their machines.
The documentary video camera news style of filming really makes the film genuine and idea was fresh. Some good lines from the movie: Wikus – “Don't give up on me, Okay? Because I haven't given up on you.” MNU Humvee – “When dealing with aliens, try to be polite, but firm. And always remember that a smile is cheaper than a bullet.” Copley makes a convincing portrayal of a man whose perception changes of the aliens. Some themes subconsciously or thru symbolisms are forced eviction, abused authority, racism, sadism, terrorism, fabrication and illegal businesses. Only trepidations I have are the reason for the ship (broken and fixed again), how Wikus and the alien understand each other even finding out its name and Obesandjo’s head being blown off and goo comes out instead of blood. The humor in the script was wonderful, effects were breathtaking that you empathize with Christopher, score adds to the drama and action was swift. District 9 conveys one of the best alien related films around with not only its visuals but also terrific storytelling.
