I approve. Behold a cinematically legendary adventure masterpiece, a key influence in the creation of famous blockbusters like Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), and the first film proof of B. Traven's insatiable passion and taste for the Mexican culture, 12 years before Macario (1960) was released. Reasons that claim this magnum opus as Huston's best film are countless (my full support still goes with The Maltese Falcon [1941]), but plot twists and an amazing character development have accurately established its very much deserved reputation. An adventure mixed with drama and humor. A classic that heavily influenced Paul Thomas Anderson to write There Will Be Blood. Dobbs (Humphrey Bogart) and Curtin (Tim Holt) and Howard (Walter Huston) search for gold in the Sierra Madre mountains. Locations were well picked. Bogart and Huston were just fascinating in their roles. Cinematography, direction, endearing score and pace of the storytelling excellent. Screenplay was superb with lines: Howard - "Anything can happen." Curtin - I'd fight for you and yours just as I'd fight for the old man." Dobbs - "Conscience. What a thing. If you've got a conscience it will pester you to death." and the famous line from the Bandit leader - " "Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges! I don't have to show you any stinkin' …

Two down at heel Americans stranded in the backwaters of Mexico use the last of their money to go searching for gold in the company of grizzled old prospector Walter Huston. Unfortunately when they strike it rich, avarice turns them against each other resulting in deceit and murder. John Huston's classic story of greed is based upon The Pardoner's Tale from Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales. It's basically a morality story warning of the dangers of greed and how the promise of wealth can blacken a man's heart; in this case Humphrey Bogart in quite possibly his finest performance. Huston is also marvellous as the pragmatic and worldly wise old geezer who predicted everything that occurs to the disbelief of his initially wide eyed and enthusiastic partners.
