Not a real good movie

LAPD "Det. Tom Ludlow" (Keanu Reeves) is spiraling out of control. He has lost his wife to another man, and has taken to the bottle. He also rarely follows regulations, and has been known to beat information out of suspects.

In fact, his unit is known for covering up for all their wrong-doings, including the unit's commander (Forest Whitaker), who has taken "Ludlow" under his wing.

After saving two girls from kidnappers, and covering up what really happened, "Ludlow's" former partner (Terry Crews) goes to internal affairs, which opens an investigation on "Ludlow."

When he hears about the investigation, "Ludlow" goes to confront his former partner in a corner store, only to get involved in an apparent robbery, but witnesses the two suspects hunting down the whistle-blower, and …

Keanu Reeves is As Stoic As a Rock

Franz Patrick - wrote on 07/06/2008

I was reluctant to see this film because of its many negative reviews. However, upon seeing it, I really wasn't that bad. Sure, Keanu Reeves is as stoic as a rock but I didn't really notice until I chose to think about it. The tone of the film is uneven because I feel like it tried too hard to get its point across about the inside workings (and the corrupt minds) of authority figures. But when things got intense, it was fascinating and I couldn't wait to see what would happen next. There are a plethora of familiar faces here, including Dr. House A.K.A. Hugh Laurie, a guy who is seemingly in every indie romantic comedies--Jay Mohr, and "Prison Break"'s Amaury Nolasco. Surprisingly, I liked Chris Evans a lot in this picture. I didn't hate him like I did in "Fantastic Four." But the script …

Departed Confidential

BryanFury - wrote on 04/27/2008

If you take an old storyline then you add a few bits and pieces of twists and turns then voilà you've got Street Kings. The story is something you probably seen and heard a thousand times before. The only difference is the character that’s in it. If I could rename the title I'd probably name this Departed Confidential. Keanu's acting is mediocre and nothing too different from his previous cop role in Speed. I would have rather liked to see Terry Crews do his robot dance than seeing him do a minute of air time. The only plus side I see is the whole underground take on L.A's mean streets. Common also did something worthy even for a very short amount of time. And also we don't have to worry about Hugh Laurie quitting his day job, he won't be doing that anytime soon after a forgettable …

De-throne these "Kings"!

kcvidkid - wrote on 04/15/2008

In the post-viewing hype I consumed about "Street Kings", I learned that the filmmakers wanted it to be linked to "L.A. Confidential" since the source material for both came from author James Ellroy. I would never have realized that on my own: "Street Kings" is nowhere near the quality of one of my favorite movies from 1997.

However, unlike "Hitman", which I also had the misfortune to watch last weekend, "Street Kings" at least has more going for it. It is at least average.

But its strengths and weaknesses both come from the same element of the movie: its cast. I have to admit that I wanted to see "Street Kings" becase of Keanu Reeves, Chris Evans, Forest Whitaker and Hugh Laurie. I figured it HAD to be good. Instead, it's only interesting. I think Keanu was all right. But …
