A solid and entertaining SF.

Once again a solid and entertaining SciFi.

This movie was thrilling because of two things:
- The feature of time traveling has already been used several times, but the fact that people are sent from the future and then being eliminated by a "Looper" is unique (Maybe I'm grossly making a mistake but I've never encountered this in another movie). The Looper is sent on retirement after his alter ego returns from the future loaded with gold. Tricky but ingenious.
- The acting of Pierce Gagnon as Cid is extremely sublime and at times surprising, knowing that he's still such a little fellow. Those eyes that look up at the young Joe while asking if he killed people allready. And that frenzy look at the end when confronted with BW. And such acting by a little kid. Superb.

Intelligent Time Travel Film

Looper: 4.5/5
Short Synopsis: A hit man who kills people from the future encounters the future version of himself.

This movie is excellent in my opinion. Where to start is the question. Well for one the acting. Joseph Gordon Levitt is especially sharp playing a young Bruce Willis. He has that bad ass hit man vibe that Willis is known so well for. I believe that Willis and Levitt's ability to successfully mirror each other is a huge hit or miss shot that Johnson took with the casting and it paid off. That's one of the driving forces behind the movie. The acting that was most impressive to me was that of the little boy. The dialogue and scene with him and the math was amazingly done. It sent shivers down my spine and made me feel for Emily Blunt like I was right there. If he wasn't as …

"Looper" by Yojimbo

Yojimbo - wrote on 05/16/2013

In a future where time travel has been invented and outlawed, it is used solely by a criminal organisation who use it to "disappear" undesirables into the past where they are disposed of by hired killers called "loopers". I was very much looking forward to Rian Johnson's foray into science fiction, being a big fan of his two previous films both of which were similar genre homages. Sci fi is a rather more difficult nut to crack however, as most of the concepts it employs can be traced back to a few key examples. In this case, the comparisons to The Terminator in particular, Twelve Monkeys and Blade Runner are obvious making Looper feel a little too referential in way that Brick and The Brothers Bloom avoided. It could also be argued that its monicker could just as easily refer to the many …

Energetic theme, with believable characters

Rian Johnson with the haunting score of his brother Nathan, brings a sci-fi film that might be slightly down the level, may be due to the budget. Looper is a different film that sticks mainly upon few characters both in past and future. This is not like cloud atlas connecting the past and present, but it is a different idea of time travel, to bring the past and future in the same frame. I like the way some scenes are presented with both the past and future seems likely same. Johnson ensures that narrative is tight enough to make audience understand the concept of loopers. The viewers get clear idea of the various terms in the film, and later on will be used for understanding the film’s plot. Nothing deep or really remarkable is in Looper. I don’t understand the point that this film …

Looper

"We live the good life and the only rule is never let your target escape, even if your target is you." An unexpected awesome film with a very solid cast and wonderful premise. In the future, a mutation has occurred in a percentage of the population giving them telekinetic powers while organized crime have almost ceased power. Joe (Willis and Gordon-Levitt) has a friend Seth (Dano) who doesn't close a loop. The Rainmaker and an old future self will be involved with Joe. Adding more details of the plot might ruin the experience.

In summary, the soundtrack, direction, performances and action sequences were spectacular. It's real suprise was the intelligent screenplay rarely seen for its genre. Looper is a fantastic sci-fi about sacrifice, love, sanity, choices, morality and time …

A Sci Fi Film Unlike Any Other

mitchellyoung - wrote on 10/12/2012

Looper is many things - a science fiction contradiction, an action thriller, a pseudo coming-of-age film. It's a blending of genres in a creative and heady way - a style that still new director Rian Johnson has become known for. The film itself isn't afraid to dive into dark and tragic material and creates a post-apocalyptic world unlike any we have seen in cinema yet, full of violent gangs, time-hopping assassins, and an uber-powerful mystery warlord known as the Rainmaker. The film's futuristic setting (the year 2044, to be exact) is grounded in reality, as Johnson imagines a future world that is merely a small improvement over our own (no gravity-defying skyscrapers and robots butlers in this film!) There's little that can be said without giving away the film's many layers and …

Review: Looper

A science-fiction action film released in late September that is actually good? Yeah, I was surprised, too. That film is Looper, a hyper-stylized action thriller from director Rian Johnson, the director of Brick, a film that I have not seen but is beloved by many. Looper stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, and Jeff Daniels.

I don't want to give away much of the plot because I think, for the viewer's sake, the less you know about the movie, the more enthralling the experience may be. I'll say this: it has to do with time-travel, it takes place forty years into the future, and it involves Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt shottin' up some people, presented in an amazing style and incredible camera work.

Here is a movie that is being called "an instant sci-fi …

Gordon-Levitt is Good, Willis is Not

Alex - wrote on 09/29/2012

I liked this movie to some extent. It is not a good movie but very close. Gordon-Levitt is going to continue to be a strong actor in the next 10 years and this movie helps his action cause. Bruce Willis, however, is over the hill and has nothing left. All of his good acting is gone and we are left with a somber old man.

Story: I have seen this story before when it was called Time Cop. I am not saying this movie is not better than Time Cop but still the plot is very similar. However, this movie is told much better. Rian Johnson does a good job of throwing some uniqueness into the movie. There are also a few twists to the show but some of it is cliche. The ending is kind of a turd.

Music: I saw a featurette online that gave me great hope for the musical score. It was OK but nothing …

Back Where We Started - Here We Go Round Again

When I first heard about the concept for Looper, I knew this was going to be a film I had to watch. Time travel has always interested me when it comes to movies - whether it's taken seriously (as in Primer) or tongue-in-cheek (Timecrimes). Looper just sounded interesting: criminal syndicates in the future sending people back in time to be murdered by specially-designated "Loopers" - who, as it turns out, also end up having to kills their future selves as part of this cushy job.

The fact this is directed by Rian Johnson (who impressed me with Brick) and stars the talented Joseph Gordon-Levitt (under some modified prosthetics), action staple Bruce Willis and a scene-stealing Jeff Daniels - well, that a recipe for success. I have to say that the finished project , while not without …

Loopy Looper

Jacob Zembower - wrote on 09/28/2012

After a disappointing summer for movies it seems the studios have saved the best for last. With The Master and Lawless and now Looper, things are finally kicking up. I didn't know much about this film going in, other than the fact that it was directed by Rian Johnson and starred Joseph Gordon Levitt under off-putting latex makeup. BUT WOW! This turned out to be the biggest surprise of the year so far. Filled with twists, exhilarating action and storytelling, while also oozing with style. Looper is a fantastic, bloody, time traveling, scifi, near-masterpiece. For sheer though provoking thrills, it's the Inception of 2012 (though the two films are entirely different.) It's great to see such a fresh, original, and dizzying mainstream release, and I look forward to seeing it again.
