An arty crime movie with lot of plottwists.

An intense beginning, a middle that makes you sprawl in your sofa and a finale where you're tossed back and forth by an accumulation of twists. That's just about the brief summary that I can make here. The visual way of conveying and the atmospheric soundtrack aren't turning this into a real high flyer eventually.
The various plot twists may indicate two things : a ruse to hide the weak storyline or the director himself lost it completely. Based on the article from nu.nl I gamble on the second. It's an art film. That's indisputable. The stylized camera moves and the sometimes dazzling neon-like colors show this directly. Ultimately it's bout the art world and the artificial manipulation of one's consciousness through hypnosis.
McAvoy and Dawson both deliver a strong …

A mimicked version of Inception without stupidity

Directed by Danny Boyle
Starring James McAvoy, Rosario Dawson and Vincent Cassell
Danny Boyle, the man behind a masterful film (Slumdog Millionaire) and the adventurous thriller (127 hours) has picked a thriller inspiring from Inception. But it is that, it never tried to copy. Trance is thrilling. Trance is unique for Boyle. His vision: Never try to be hero is evident here. Nothing greatly boasted or splendid but, a provocative and heart tugging drama filled with intelligent action and demanding performances. Simon, auctioneer (wonderful, McAvoy) loses his memory due to an injury and he is forced to get back his memories with a hypnotist (charming, Dawson), so that he can give to his opponent Frank (rusty, Cassell) a painting worth the risk. But this is not alone, the film. There is …

The best line in this critics opinion to sum up the story was "The memory is not destroyed, it is locked in a cage, and with enough force, enough violence, the lock can be broken. It comes back, the memory, not completely, not entirely, but enough to drive you, to make you feel you have been cheated, enough to make you angry." A film about a stolen painting, hypnotism, memories and love. Soundtrack was impressive coming from Boyle but the plot confuses and tries ti impress. Dawson and McAvoy show convincing performances but the characters were dull. Obviously not one of the director's best efforts but worth viewing for the sake of art, crime and drama. Trance may not bring anything new but the overly stylish method of the way it was presented may be worth while.

Wait. . . What?

Trance is a movie about hypnotism, art theft and abusive relationships. If that sounds like it’s a good Idea for a movie, I would agree, it sounds like an awesome Idea for a movie. Sadly despite the coolness of the concept Trance falls short in the execution.
The movie begins with a solid plot and quick pace, bringing us through the ins an outs of an Art Heist then later through the ins and outs of the people involved. The first bit of this film is really good, but sadly the movie keeps going and building, and by the time the third act comes along it has pretty much collapsed in on itself.
The plot twists come fast and often in this films second half, and in the end, when the final explanation for everything reveals itself, it just doesn’t make any sense in context. The …

Trance (2013) Simon (James McAvoy) works as an art auctioneer at a prestigious auction house. While auctioning off a painting worth millions of dollars, the auction house is hit by robbers, resulting in Simon getting hit over the head. When he wakes up, the burning question everyone has, including the robbers is, where is the painting? But Simon can’t remember a thing about the robbery. This is one of those films that you never know what is real and what is made up, and I guarantee that you won’t see the ending coming. I liked McAvoy in the role of the auctioneer who gets in with the wrong people, but the performance that really impressed me was Rosario Dawson in the role of the hypnotherapist who is hired to help Simon remember. While I didn’t enjoy this film as much as some of …

"Trance" by Yojimbo

An auctioneer suffers head trauma during an art robbery that causes him to lose his memory, much to the chagrin of the perpetrators who employ a hypnotherapist to learn the whereabouts of the missing painting. Genre spanner Danny Boyle turns his hand to the heist movie in this mind bending psycho thriller that bears all the hallmarks of his otherwise eclectic projects. The film opens strongly with an exciting smash and grab in the vein of Guy Ritchie or Stephen Soderbergh as Vincent Cassell and his men lay siege to the auction house. The dramatic climax is also a nerve shredding explosion of violence and revelation but somewhere between, the surreal mish-mash of reality and psychology somehow fails to glue to two together; McAvoy's character is a little too schizophrenic to relate to and …
