"Side Effects" by Yojimbo

A young woman suffering from depression is charged with murder leaving her psychiatrist with the task of proving that her actions were caused by the side effects of an experimental medication that he prescribed. This psychological thriller from Steven Soderbergh is very Hitchcockian in its ambitions; the subject matter of mental illness combined with the twists and turns of a post modern thriller is very much in a similar vein to Vertigo. While it never reaches the lofty heights of this particular classic, Side Effects is smart enough to keep the audience guessing as to which way the story will weave next and has a nice sideline in questioning the ethics of how pharmaceutical corporations run their businesses and how psychiatrists are so eager to prescribe easy fixes in the form of the …

Side Effects

I loved this movie. Side Effects is an incredibly complex and amazingly smart thriller; because of a fantastic screenplay, the plot convincingly leads you down one path, but by the end of it all, you're nowhere close to where you thought the film was going. The film does take its time setting itself up during the first third of the film, but once the story starts to unfold, it twists relentlessly while never being entirely obvious. This is one of Soderbergh's best directorial efforts; he directs with style, the aesthetics are beautiful, and he gets some really good performances from his cast. Rooney Mara is terrific, she delves into many different levels of depression and she really impressed me my with her performance. Jude Law is also really good. I think he's a great (and underrated) …

Better Murder Through Chemistry

What starts off as a seemingly straight-forward story about the evils of heartless drug companies takes a nifty twist that becomes a much better thriller involving some well-laid plans - devious and inventive plans I might add. It's not often that I get surprised, but I am happy to report that Side Effects did the trick and made the movie that much better.

What really sets things apart is that the four main characters are all really well cast. Jude Law is excellent as a psychiatrist, Dr. Jonathan Banks, who just happens to be assigned to a woman who has attempted suicide - that would be Emily Taylor (a likewise excellent Rooney Mara) whose husband (the always effective Channing Tatum) has just been released from prison after four years following an insider trading scandal that left …

"Depression is the inability to construct a future." Emily Taylor (Rooney Mara) attempts suicide because of her depression. Jonathan (Jude Law) contacts Emily's previous psychiatrist, Victoria (Catherine Zeta-Jones), recommends that Jonathan put Emily on a new drug called Ablixa. Martin is killed after Emily takes Ablixa. The most noticeable performance that should be recognized by the Awards bodies was Rooney Mara. It shows her acting range from being deceptively authentic and effective in her role since the ending had a certain twist tailor fit for the thriller genre. Only reservation this reviewer had was the pace, which slowed down when Jonathan tried to find out the truth. The soundtrack felt out of place as well. Nevertheless, the powerhouse acting and superb direction …

Side Effects is Thrilling and Beautiful

A very tightly woven thriller with an odd ambiguous ending just the way I like ‘em. Side Effects more then any other movie I’ve seen so far this year warrants discussion. I wish I hadn’t gone to see it alone, the way I’d have someone to talk to about this very provocative film.

To describe the premise of this film is to ruin it, and the ending is in some way’s glorious and in other way’s unfulfilling, but that isn’t due to incompetence on part of the film makers, but due to careful deliberateness. The twists, the characters and the thrill of the film are all setup wonderfully.

Side Effects isn’t just about the twists either, (though there are good twists) it’s about characters. I love Jude Laws honest Psychiatrist; his evolution from a good man to one who …

Review: Side Effects

Side Effects is a grim and edgy film, tautly directed by Steven Soderbergh. What starts as a character study shockingly transcends into a diabolical mystery, with a lot of well-executed twists and turns that come off as unpredictable and appropriately shocking. Rooney Mara is insanely good as Emily, who is prescribed a drug by Dr. Banks (Jude Law) due to her depression and attempts at suicide, which may or may not have some serious side effects. I'm not quite sure how, but her performance here felt reminiscent to her dark and dedicated work in Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Jude Law and Catherine Zeta-Jones provide memorable performances, whose characters get more and more interesting as the film progresses. Channing Tatum, who has been really impressing me lately, is also …

Side Effects (2013) Emily’s (Rooney Mara) husband Martin (Channing Tatum) is just released from prison for serving time for insider trading. But life is getting her down and, after an apparent suicide try, Emily agrees to see a psychiatrist, Dr. Jonathan Banks (Jude Law). He decides to treat Emily with a new product recently introduced to the public, a product that may cause deadly consequences. The best part of this film is the first twenty-five minutes, which has an incredible amount of twists and turns in the plot. The film does slow down after that, and I only really enjoyed it again near the end when some of the better plot twists were revealed. I liked Jude Law as the psychiatrist that gets in over his head but found that Mara’s portrayal of the troubled wife of Martin was …
