An outstanding Horror

"Sometimes it's better to keep the genie in the bottle."
After reading a lot about it and hearing the rave reviews, I finally sat in my cosy sofa to watch this, according to sources, extreme creepy horror and enjoy every second of it. I was very curious if this film would tickle my nerves and let a scary and eerie feeling descend all over me.
Ultimately it wasn't so ...
Throw "The Exorcist", "The Changeling", "The Amityville Horror", "Poltergeist" and "Paranormal Activity" together, shake it well and finish it with masterly camera work, and you get this horror gem as a result. Only "Drag me to hell" also got my appreciation and I judged this one as being a decent horror film since they don't make them so well anymore recent years. Nowadays it's more teen-horror like Twilight and …

Creepier, and energetic old school scare film
sreekirch - wrote on 12/01/2013
Time to scream ! James Wan is back with another scare stuff. The Conjuring is another film with a simplistic take on the Hollywood horror dramas. But the helm of the film is taken by James Wan (the man who gave us Saw series and the Insidious, which gained quite good ratings). So is the new offering special from James Wan? Does it get to the basics right? Will it be loved by the audience? Let me give a deep smile for the questions. James Wan has proved he is best at it.
The Conjuring is a creepy film. Never get serious for the first hour of occasional thrills and spills, because there is loads of creep stuff given by Wan towards the next half. It is crafted with great energy and the ghostly, and horror stuff does a nice job. This film gives what generally a horror film fan wants. …

A milestone of modern suspense horror.

James Wan. Wow. Thank you.
Thank you for moving away from the commercial horror and making the most original horror film of the year.
Focusing heavily on atmosphere and tension, Wan seemed to captivate me with every shot in this film.
The Conjuring is an excellently made film. Not just an excellently directed or written film, but it as a whole it makes me overjoyed this project was green-lit.
I think the main element that was the definite standout in the film was of course the suspense. It is perfect. Very rarely are there jump scares, and when they are, they have been set up very well for the viewer to actually jump in their seat.
This movie just did correctly what others couldn't do. Like in The Sixth Sense, we saw Cole go around hallways and witness dead people. I'm not saying …

The Conjuring review

One of the most well crafted true to life based stories for a horror picture. Carolyn (Lili Taylor) and Roger (Ron Livingston) Perron together with Nancy, Cindy, and Christine move into an old house. Paranormal investigators Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) Warren's assistance were needed by the Perron's after a series of spooky incidents inside the house.
The film had elements of The Shining (the setting of the house), The Birds (even the sounds were earily similar), Paranormal Activity, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Exorcist and The Sixth Sense (Lorraine’s gift). Another observation was the witch plot and it’s insertion to the story. Nothing major but still noticeable. The cop was a good addition to bring in the humor. This critic was surprised at the …

A scary throwback.

With The Conjuring, James Wan continues to prove he's developing as a film maker. Beginning with the unintentionally hilarious Saw, to Dead Silence, and Insidious which became his biggest hit, The Conjuring is his crowning achievement so far. Based on the true story of the Perron Famly Haunting, as well Ed and Lorrainne Warren, two paranormal investigators who come in to try to help the Perron's but soon find themselves in one of the darkest, most terrifying haunting they've witnessed. Wan knows how to play his audience like a tightly wound fiddle. Filled with such sustained sequences of pure tension, it left my stomach in knots. Opening with a prologue involving Annabelle the haunted doll (another true story) he sets the stage. The first scene is so creepy, tense, and cover …

Fact or Fiction - It's Frightening
Chris Kavan - wrote on 07/24/2013
I've seen a fair share of horror films and by this time, I know what works for me. That doesn't stop me from watching a lot of horror movies I pretty much know are going to be bad (thank you Netflix) but I'm always hoping to stumble upon something that takes me by surprise. I knew going in that The Conjuring has been getting great critical reception and a good reaction from general audiences as well. Yet so many times I have been disappointed, even if a film has been praised.
What makes The Conjuring work for me is twofold: the sense of dread in the film is pervasive - it never lets up. And second, the casting is spot-on and fleshed out just enough to make you care about these characters. The based-on-a-true-story angle has been done plenty in the past and, despite the fact you know …

Review: The Conjuring
MikePA - wrote on 07/24/2013
Quick Review --- The movie was directed by James Wan, who is an expert at building suspense and maintaining a very creepy mood. The Conjuring, skillfully made and suspenseful as hell, is Wan's best and scariest film. Right from the get go, we feel uneasy. The first half is slow building, which is good because it allows time to establish the plot and the setting and develop the characters while still providing genuine scares. The tension is continuously building as strange things happen both to and around the Perron family. It's not until the second half of the film, when Ed and Lorraine Warren investigate the house, when things start to get bug nuts insane. All of that crackling tension explodes into dynamites of intensity as it builds to a jaw-droppingly awesome climax. The Conjuring …

A Scary, Intense Horror Movie
Norrin - wrote on 07/22/2013
"The Conjuring" is intense and often scary. It is also expertly made and executed. While the violence never gets too gory, the movie is so scary that it really does not matter. What makes the movie work, more than the scares, however, is the fact that all of the characters are well developed and sympathetic, and there is some real emotional impact here. Part of this emotional impact is due to some just terrific acting by everyone across the board. Special kudos to Lili Taylor and Vera Farmiga, who both deserve best supporting actress Oscar nominations. The director, James Wan, has to get the credit for the rest. I found Wan's last movie, Insidious, to be flawed and not scary at all. Here, he does a slam bang job of delivering a very old school horror movie that delivers plenty of …

A Pleasant, (Scary,) Surprise

I did not want to see this movie.
I have a tradition of going to see an early bird showing of a new movie every Friday morning. For scheduling reasons I went and saw the Conjuring, the movie that looked the least appealing to me.
I watched a couple trailers, and it the conjuring just did not look good to me. It looked like paint by the numbers haunted house movie. Even the title sounded lame; “The Conjuring” sounds like something you would name a horror movie because all the other good horror movie names were taken.
Fortunately I was pleasantly surprised by The Conjuring. The movie does take a lot from other movies (especially the Exorcist and Poltergeist,) but that’s less a fault then it is a feature, homage; and the movie doesn’t rely solely on the backs of others, …
