The magic of Mary Poppins stays

It was real amazing how it appeared so new and fresh but very reminiscent of the original. I find it surreal when the its musicality and choreography reminds me clearly of the first Mary Poppins. I appreciate how the story line was a careful tweaking of the nostalgic story line we loved. I obviously did not see Mary Poppins (1964) on its original release dates, only to see it so much later. I admit that I have a relatively little appreciation of the original ultimately because it was not made for an audience like me. After watching Mary Poppins Returns, I get to appreciate so much more the family orientation and magic the original brought to the people of its time. Colorful if conventional cash-in on a classic.

This spirited sequel to the Disney classic boasts some lively musical numbers and dazzling animated set-pieces just as in the original film. Thing is though, the movie plays out exactly like the original film. There's little in the way of surprise or innovation so the plot serves mainly as a nostalgia trip. The cast is still good though. Emily Blunt is a natural successor to Julie Andrews. Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer are solid as Jane and Michael Banks who are now grown-up. Lin-Manuel Miranda however is a poor substitute for Dick van Dyke while Colin Firth has a one-dimensional role as the stock evil banker. The best moments of the film are when it tries to make the returning characters mature instead of simply wallowing in nostaglia; a good message for viewers.

So this being a sequel made me curious and wary; I went into this expecting nothing to avoid any disappointment. I sat down, arms crossed and waited patiently for the trailers to be over. However, halfway through the movie I noticed …
