Worth Seeing For The Atmosphere Alone

JLFM - wrote on 11/11/2012

I am frequently disappointed by action films. They tend to be little more than excuses for elaborate fight and chase scenes with lots by the way of explosions and A-List actors and little by the way of plot or brains. I applaud I Am Legend for not being that kind of action film. Actually, it's quite the opposite. Fights and combat scenes are surprisingly scarce, but does that make I Am Legend dull? Far from it. I Am Legend's creepy and sometimes frightening atmosphere alone will keep you on your toes for a majority of the film's run time.

Robert Neville is the last person left on earth. Everyone else has been completely wiped out by an awful virus. Oh, there are people that weren't killed by the virus, such as Neville, but they've all turned into zombies, and their only …

Although not having seen anything recent or new if you will lately i have been re watching films on tv that i rate and respect quite admirably. 'I Am Legend' just happens to fall in that category and was on the other evening. I have nothing but the utmost respect for actor Will Smith. Starting out as a rapper who won 4 Grammy awards then made a risky career change to actor starring in tv's 'The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air' which proved to be one of the smartest career changes that i can recall then jumping into a space craft and blowing the box office too bits with 'Independence Day' In short..there is no realm that this man cannot conquer..cut and dry! His performance in 'I Am Legend' is prime example of why he is the only actor to have 8 films of his be number one at the box office upon …

"I Am Legend" by Yojimbo

Will Smith stars as a military researcher who is seemingly the last person left on Earth trying to find the cure for an engineered retro virus that has decimated the human population and turned many into mindless killing machines. It seems to me that the reason a lot of people slated this film was solely because it was not a faithful adaptation of the book it takes its name from. I personally haven't read it and to be honest I don't care if it's faithful or not. A carbon copy adaptation of a book does not necessarily make a good film and vice versa; the two are completely different media. The fact is that I found this pretty enjoyable. Will Smith is quite convincing as a man suffering the loneliness of total isolation and the scenes in the first hour of the film when the "enemy" is still …

This is definitley a new spin on the zombie-apocalypse type movie. My one main gripe is the 'alternative ending'. I hate movies doing that now, like hey if you don't like the ending we made here's another one for you. If you are trying to show me a movie, tell me a story then have the confidence in the story to tell it to me the way you want to, not to cover all the bases and try to make everyone happy. The ending of a movie is basically the entire point of watching a movie, it's the conclusion and it my opinion the most important part. It's what everything else was building up for, and what you are unknowingly waiting for. I also liked that this movie wasn't just 'building up to the sequel to try and make a franchise' like all the other zombie movies coming out. This one showed a …

Legend Worthy

I Am Legend was one of the best movies I've watched in a long time.

The story was wonderfully done, and the pacing of the movie was excellent. For a zombie movie, I Am Legend is one of the best that I've seen. The way that Will Smith interacted with everything around him, especially for his thinking, was wonderfully done. I loved the way that he progressed through the movie. Nearing the end, I felt emotionally attached to his character.

Placed during a zombie outbreak, the way the few characters interacted and responded to each other made the movie worth while. More than half of the movie was Will Smith with his dog, but that was some of the best drama I'd seen in a move to date. Everything worked together really well and made I Am Legend wonderful to watch again and …

Before I went to see "I Am Legend", I had heard from a lot of people that it was a typical zombie movie...wrong. I could not agree more with the review featured on the main page. The movie portrays an incredibly realistic situation that could definitely happen in today's world. The thing I look for in a movie is not how much it scare you literally, but how it frightens you mentally. The images of New York City, and the abandoned skyscrapers covered in sheets to contain the virus shows the failure to stop the virus. Even when Smith is looking through other peoples homes, you can see flyers from the gov that say "BEWARE: Dogs come out at night, and are dangerous, yadda yadda" The whole movie is crazy real, and actually kinda frightening, some parts you won't see coming. I once had a dream …

"Two out of three ain't bad"

I entered the cinema with no expectations for this film, quickly had my hopes raised and then with the final third had them dashed with a jarring immediacy.
I Am Legend begins somewhat as a meditation on loneliness; Lawrence creates a wonderful mood and an exquisite sense of melancholic emptiness as Will Smith is often seen on screen as cutting a small figure in vast expanse. As Smith begins anthropomorphising everything around him from his dog to shop dummies it becomes apparent that his solitude has begun to have an unhinging effect on his psyche. The film excells when it as at it's most inert; a Hollywood inaction film if you will.
Unfortunately Legend descends into a mass of terribly Computer Generated Zombies all of whom are so patently added in post-production suspension of …

Will Smith is a Legend in his own time!!

Shelly - wrote on 02/25/2008

I am not a fan of the zombie/flesh eating monster movies - so I am sceptical going into the movie to begin with. Being a HUGE Will Smith fan - and the rave reviews - is what drew me to the movie theater to see this one.
Will Smith - wow - only a truly great actor can carry such a movie by himself for the majority of the movie and he does an EXCELLENT job. Not only does he speak to a dog throughout the movie - his other communication is held with inanimate manniquins. He does an excellent job. I agree - many things are left unexplained and this causes me some distress --as well as the ending. But, a remake is a remake - and not having seen the original - I am left to assume this is how it is supposed to be. This movie had me on the edge of my seat, cowered in the back of it, …

A Masterful Stroke of Silences

Franz Patrick - wrote on 02/11/2008

I really enjoyed this film, not only because it reminded me of "28 Days Later," but because I saw this film alone and it was about isolation. I absorbed every image this film has to offer because of how haunting the prospect of finding a cure for cancer but turning out to be the opposite. If someone does finally find a cure for cancer, I'll definitely think of this picture. I was surprised by the intensity of the first forty minutes of the movie. The silences are extremely appropriate; when something makes a sound, my brain couldn't help but think, "Danger! Danger!" I was quite amused. Although the ending was kind of a letdown, I think it's not that bad because it's hopeful and sad at the same time. I think this is one of Will Smith's best movies theme-wise and acting-wise. More than …

Fifty Foot Charisma Overshadows Plot

Topher - wrote on 02/02/2008

*** This is not the same movie as 28 Days Later *** They both have zombies and the end of the world in common, set against an urban landscape, but that's about it. Each had very distinct tones, world views and viewer experience.

The rawness of 28 Days owes much to the viewer's inability to trust any character on screen: they might do just about anything to survive. They are unpredictable. The actors are unknowns.

Legend, however, is characterized by Will Smith's likableness. Perhaps one of the most charismatic actors alive, Smith is one of very few actors who can hold one's attention for two hours without looking like he's hogging the spotlight.

In the case of Legend, it isn't so much that Smith steals the show from what could be an incredible plot/scenario -- it's …
