Using mostly text taken directly from the Gospel, Pasolini's film moves through the tale of Christ's life with economy and power. It hits on the key scenes in the Gospel, but spends a lot of time (moreso than most Christ-centered films) on Jesus' teaching and his relationship with his disciples and followers. The film's blunt visual style serves its purpose well and Enrique Irazoqui gives a commanding performance as Jesus. The film gives a life to the words of the Gospel that are memorable and touching and puts the story of Jesus into a very human context using warm acting and believable expressions.

Pasolini was a master and it shows in his second film, The Gospel According to St. Matthew. Extremely tasteful, this is no Passion of the Christ, which shows the torture of Christ but not the love so much. Sure Jesus suffered for us and that is included in the movie, but it shows a greater scope.
