Plot: A successful woman in Seoul finds herself overburdened at work and caught up as an eyewitness to a murder, returns to a small island from her past for rest. Bok-nam has been living on the island since they were children, and despite numerous letters and pleas for help, has never managed to escape. As a lone young woman, with a daughter, the island is like a prison - the men are under the influence of a drug while the older women make her work all day. You don't know how far you can push a human until they break - this a is a very bleak movie - and one doesn't like to imagine things like this go on, but I have a feeling it does. Not even revenge helps things along - make sure to have a pick-me-up ready after watching this one.

Korean schizo flick

My conclusion is that I was staring practically 90% of the movie to the bottom of the screen. My lack of knowledge of the Korean language made me look at the subtitles all that time. Something I almost never do while watching a movie.
The film itself wasn't that spectacular anyway. The story itself is filled with emotions. A psychologically and physically abused woman on an island with a retarded probably by inbred stricken family. A city girl who goes on a mandatory vacation and visits the island again. Her grandparents lived there and she met a girl called Bok-nam there in those days. She notices however that Bok-nam is a plaything in the hands of the men and a willing slave for the older women. The cry for help to get her out of that situation, stays unanswered. Hae-won reacts …

This is a bleak and unpleasant film, but it's also darkly poetic, strange, and viscerally satisfying. It shows how one person, and on a deeper level a whole society, can only take so much abuse and mistreatment before they lash out in fury and take no prisoners. Beautifully filmed and extremely well acted, Bedevilled moves at a slow, yet engrossing, pace. It's certainly hard to watch, but by the last act the blood flows and transforms into something more than your basic revenge drama/horror film. Definitely don't let this get by you as it's available now on netflix streaming. I decided to watch it without knowing anything about it and I think that is definitely the best way to view it.
