"30 Days Of Night" by Yojimbo
Yojimbo - wrote on 03/31/2012
A remote Alaskan town that endures a month of darkness once a year is cut off by a pack of predatory vampires. Josh Hartnett heads up a group of similarly bland survivors who run through snow covered streets/huddle in deserted buildings/repeat to fade. The vampires are of the feral pack animal variety and do little more than squawk and hiss and leap through the air as they pick off our stereotypical heroes and so are just as uninteresting. Mark Boone Junior is the least dreary of the bunch, and the scene where he decides to go on the offensive is easily the best, but he and it are far too short lived. There are some decent effects and a few nice images of blood stained snow, but right through to the anti-climactic ending, there's little here to distinguish it from the untold undead …

30 Days of Night

30 Days of Night. I love this movie, it's a fresh take on the now dulled Vampire sub-genre of aristocratic, sauve, beautiful, brooding Vampires I have grown to hate. These are what Vampires are supposed to be: cunning, vicious, unstoppable animals. Not prissy, pale things. These things were scary. They didn't hiss or go 'grr!', they screamed like demons. That guttural, yet oddly high-pitched shriek is enough to send shivers down my spine!
Josh Hartnett, I believe, did an amazing job as Sherrif Eben Olemaun, an actor I wasn't too fond of.
The concept is fresh and original, away from the aching backstories of these undead. These were monsters whose only purpose was to rip your throat open and drink your blood.
The stark, almost Expressionist (yeah, I'm that pretentious!) visuals lend a …

Before the initial release of 30 Days of Night, most horror movie sites were having a ball with how much exciting information about the film was being released. I set my hopes extremely high for the film, although I have not read the graphic novel by Steve Niles, I read the novel he released which was the exact same thing as the graphic novel. It was amazing, slightly different then the film, but it was amazing. Even though I am not a huge fan of the vampire sub genre, I really looked into the movie. Now that I got it off netflix, I am in love with it.
In the Northern most town in the world, there is a time when they have one month, 30 days, of straight night. On the first day of night though, dogs are being butchered and vandalism starts taking over the town. But when people begin …

One of the most unique vampire movies

After reading reviews that said this movie is mediocre at best I didn't see this in the theatre. I really wish I had! This film was not only highly entertaining, but was also really well done. Unlike typical vampire movies were there are lots of cheep thrills and gore, this one was eerie and somewhat action packed. It reminded me of Assault on Precinct 13th in the way the people are hopelessly trapped by circumstances that seem impossible to overcome.
The thing I liked most about this movie is it dove right into the action. Instead of the shit hitting the fan an hour into the movie, it started early on and never really let up. This is pretty good for a movie that is almost 2 hours long and a hard task to achieve in a vampire movie.
I also like the vampires. They were not …

Josh Hartnett is the main reason why I watched this film. The vampire aspect comes second because I miss "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" so much. This could've been a great flick if it stopped trying to be like "28 Days Later," especially with the soundtrack. What I liked best about this film is the tone: it's consistenly menacing because the shadows and the snow became their own character. I didn't like the foreign vampires at all, which I initially assumed to be Russian. I didn't like the ending that much because I thought it was an easy way out. I also didn't like the way the vampires would kill people and how the camera would shake relentlessly. Still, I didn't hate the movie. I simply thought it was okay. It's not worth going to the cinema for but it is more than enough for a Netflix …

30 Days of Night - Ugly Vamps, but uglier story

The movie to me was like resident evil meets big brother... Kudos to the make-up job, these vampire guys are the ugliest a** I’ve seen today and probably the most realistic one. Because the vampire movies before, they are more concerned on who's pretty on film. Like crazy Tom, Mr. Jolie, Desperado himself, and yes who can forget Kate so hot Beckinsale.. The beginning of the movie was intense, kind of like mellow dramatic so to speak. You have the wanderer looking at horizon staring at the coldness of the last daylight. His main purpose is to warn the dammed villagers a plague is coming. His character to me was like a throwback to Steve Buscemi’s character in Desperado. Few minutes more into this movie, boredom comes into play. You somewhat felt like these villagers from Alaska was …

Vampire Movie Without Enough Bite.

Aside from an interesting premise and a few radical death scenes, there's not much else to recommend from an otherwise by-the-numbers horror film with serious pacing issues.
I really do like the premise: isolated frozen town with 30 days of darkness besieged by a small yet vicious group of vampires. Heck, I'm surprised no one else thought of this before. However, in the first 10 minutes you clearly know who is going to make it to the end and who is going to be vampire food. I wish we could get more than cursory character development, but then the horror genre, for the most part, never delves deeply into the psyche of characters.
Then we have the vampires. Ignoring the traditional fangs, these guys have a full mouth of razor sharp teeth. For being around for centuries, you think …

Intriguing Premise Severely Underdeveloped

In its ever-present advertising over the past few weeks, 30 DAYS OF NIGHT promised a terrifying new vision of the vampire. But what detracts from the norm is not always new, nor is a vampire always terrifying.
These vampires are indeed different from the usual breed; there are no flowing capes, no intense vampiric stares. These creatures are more animalistic predators than anything else. However, the film uses these animal-like behaviors as the main crutch of its suspense sequences, making nearly every potential scare a jump scare that is completely expected. Only in the typical and clichéd finale does the film try a different kind of suspense, but the viewer has long since lost interest.
There are a few strengths, however. The film is ably acted by its leads, with Hartnett, …
