This is the first film that bothered me. I remember starting to cry because I had terrible anxiety once it was over...but somehow, even now, about 3 years later, I can't get it out of my mind. It's a dark film, and I thought it was interestingly executed with how the "circus" is a representation of the abused child's state of mind...whenever she was happy, it'd show a circus that was happy and normal. When the abuse began, her circus became dark and odd. Very psychological, and not for someone who is sensitive to abuse or incest.

One has no idea what exactly is coming next in this disturbing study of a deranged writing process. Is someone actually being kept in a cello case, forced to watch sexual acts, and waiting to become the sexual heir to mysogonists? Maybe, but figuring out what the fuck is going on keeps this slightly above it's cheap and demeaning porn-like backdrop.

Violent, disturbing but powerful: Strange Circus
Monnie1976 - wrote on 08/19/2013
Strange Circus is a stunning film featuring chilling violence, gorgeous surrealism and is a study of trauma, revenge and abuse. This is not an easy film and it covers topics in such a way you would never see in American cinema. Almost every moment of this film is brutal or sad making this a film that is hard to forget. The acting performances were definitely well done and the whole set was so amazing. Colors are used in vivid, creative ways. Violence is posed as both a statement and a question. This is definitely one of the most disturbing films I have ever seen. I've seen four different films by director Sion Sono and all of them are worth seeing for different reasons. This is his best film though although its not one I would feel comfortable watching again anytime soon.
